It was a catastrophe the likes of which London had never seen beginning with a fire that broke out in an East End bakery in July 1666.



The fire quickly grew, and continued to burn for several days, consuming large areas of the city, and claiming thousands.



Thanks to a variety of maps made for Minecraft gamers can now enjoy the first-person perspective of The Great Fire of London.

The Museum of London created the Minecraft maps to mark 350 years since the start of the blaze.



Players can explore the burning city by playing a series mini-games.



The second map will detail how the fire spread throughout the city. It will be released in the coming months.



The players will be able to recreate the Great Fire through a number of mini games, as tongues of flame burn in the blocky world around them.



In playing as a reporter from the London Gazette, whose offices were destroyed by flames on the second day of the fire gamers will decide which household items to save.

The second map, which will be released in the coming months, shows how the fire spread across the city from Thomas Farriner's bakery (pictured).



Mini games will allow players to experience the Great Fire. They can join fire fighters fighting the flames using traditional tools, including replicas of a 17th Century firetruck (pictured) or buckets made of leather.



They can then walk through different terrains, including caves, forests, and mountains. They can also fly in the air for a birds-eye view of the landscape.



Players are now able to experience virtual reality, thanks to the game launching for the Oculus Rift. nbjyxspa



Joshua Blair, the museum's digital learning coordinator, said that the first map of the Great Fire1666 series allowed us to immerse users in London's life and times in 1666. We were able recreate the narrow streets and iconic landmarks like St Paul's Cathedral or London Bridge to set the scene for the fire.



He said: "This second map is where you'll discover the Great Fire story. aye aye We hope players are interested in learning more about this important moment in London's history.



According to its creators, the mini-games draw in historical figures including King Charles II, Thomas Farriner - whose bakery started the blaze - and also the famous diarist Samuel Pepys, who documented the blaze.



The game is part of the museum's Great Fire 1666 exhibition, which runs until April 2017.



The new maps will be available to download on Mac and PC beginning on September 2nd.
