When I first met the developers making Deepworld, which is a 2D sandbox-style building game similar to Minecraft, at GDC in March, I told them that the project would be much bigger than they anticipated. Although they have years of experience in the development of software and servers operating a huge game like Deepworld will require a significant investment. They appear to have reached an agreement. The game has inspired a Kickstarter project to raise funds early for servers and development.

The group is offering a variety of prizes to supporters, including your own personal servers and worlds, art books, and other items, and the possibility of getting your own items, your name or even images included in the game itself. Ntzsw8 is US$20,000, all in all, and as of this writing, the team has raised about $4,000. Ntzsw8 claim they'd like to pursue the project full-time, and this money will allow them to accomplish that goal.

I wish them the best. Deepworld looks good and, as I stated when I first saw it I believe that the Mac (and iOS) would benefit from a game that's like this.
