Wondering what the Minecraft recovery compass is used for? Maybe you're just curious about how to make one. The latest 1.19 update (opens with new tab), introduced the long-awaited Deep Dark biome (opens with new tab) and Warden (opens with new tab). But it's still not all doom. Wild Update also added frogs, mobs, and the cute Allay. This mob was chosen by players during 2021’s Minecraft live vote.

With so many new things to explore, you'd be forgiven for overlooking the recovery compass. It's certainly handy to have, though, especially if you're thinking of venturing into the Deep Dark or going on any other potentially dangerous adventures. Here are some instructions on how to make a Minecraft recovery map and, more importantly, the functions it performs.

What does the recovery map do in Minecraft

The Minecraft recovery map compass guides you to the exact location of your last death, making it easier for you to recover your items. The compass can only work in the same direction as where you last died. You will need to go back to the Nether to make it work.

It's unlikely that you will use it often. Even so, it's useful to have one put aside in case of any mishaps, and can save you a bunch of running around as you try to locate your possessions. You'll just have to hope that whatever killed you isn't still lurking around.
