Minecraft Java Edition has always operated pretty much as-is following Mojang's acquisition of the developer by Microsoft. Bedrock Edition came along to integrate with the Microsoft account system, but Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island - until now. Java Edition will soon require an Microsoft account to play, but you'll at least get an exclusive cape for your troubles.

In the early 2021s, you will be required to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system. Mojang claims this is to introduce two-factor authentication for increased security, though it'll also lead to improved parental control as well as chat and invitation blocking, and account integration between Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons. Mojang has no plans to alter Minecraft mods or PvP. Java and Bedrock will remain distinct games. You'll be able to continue using your existing Java username, however in the event that you're creating an account with a Microsoft account for the first time, you may have to swap account names. If you already have a Microsoft account, of course, you'll be able merge your Minecraft login right away.

Mojang is offering a cape, which was once the most sought-after Java Edition item: to facilitate the transition. You'll get a cape for free for participating in the migrationprocess, and while it won't feature the exclusive patterns of the Minecon mantles but it will give everyone an opportunity to feel regal for a while.

Although nothing is likely to change, players do have concerns. For instance, the more restrictive terms of service of Microsoft might lead to bans and could result in certain players being denied access to Minecraft.

You can get further details in the official announcement and FAQ. We'll find out how it plays out in the first quarter of 2021.
