After Mojang's acquisition of Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition is still in operation. Bedrock Edition came along to integrate with the Microsoft account system, but Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island until now. Java Edition will soon require a Microsoft account to play and you'll also get an exclusive cape for your problems.

You'll need to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system in early 2021. Mojang claims this is to introduce two-factor authentication to enhance security. However, it will also permit better parental controls, chat blocking, invitation blocking, and integration of accounts with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

In terms of Minecraft Mods and PvP, Mojang states that nothing will change. Java and Bedrock will remain separate games. While you'll be able to use your Java username, you might have to change your username if you sign up with a Microsoft account. You can merge your Minecraft sign-ins if already have an existing Microsoft account.

Mojang has announced the cape, which was previously the most exclusive Java Edition item: to facilitate the transition. You'll receive a free cape for participating in the migrationprocess, and while it's not adorned with the exclusive patterns of Minecon mantles It will offer everyone the chance to feel royal for a bit.

While nothing immediate is changing the situation, players do have concerns - notably, that Microsoft's stricter terms of service might make bans more common, locking some players out of access to Minecraft.
